Art 110 Summer 2022

  I realized that I pretty much never talk to my roommates. They're dating and free most of the time so they're out and about while I'm usually either working or dead asleep, so today I asked them what they did today and asked them to draw and document it with me for this project. I just used some colored pens, highlighters, and index cards to do this. I don't have copy paper here, this is actually the back of my work schedule. Honestly, when they asked for colored pens I really thought they were going to be good at drawing, but turns out they are not. We are a household of terrible artists. Their days are more mundane than I thought it would be. They're usually gone the entire day so I thought they would be doing super cool things but a movie theatre is fun too. 

  The Monuments Men & Woman in Gold 1. The Monuments Men is about an army unit formed by President Truman made up of people in art related careers that are led by Frank Stokes. The art is stolen by German Nazis who hide thousands of art pieces in mines and other areas. These men are on a time crunch to find all of these artworks because they are told that the Nazis are to destroy all German possessions, including the art pieces, if the Nazis lose the war. They are also competing against the Soviets who want that art pieces as reparations for the war. I learned that during WW2, the Nazis stole Jewish art (and other cultural art pieces) and attempted to destroy them in order to erase their history. So not only are they physically doing a genocide, they also attempted a historical/cultural genocide.  The Woman in Gold is about a Jewish WW2 survivor that escaped from Nazi Germany to America with her husband, leaving the rest of her family behind. Marina Abramovic is a performance artist that often calls herself "the mother of performance art". Her performance styles bridges the gap between performer and audience as she often performs pieces that would include the audience in some way. She continually pushes her body to its limits by using both outside and internal forces (i.e. medications and fire) which continuously surprise the audience. Paweł Althamer is a contemporary performer/artist that involved sensory deprivation in his performances. One example of this was encasing himself in a plastic bag filled with cold water or using drugs. Both these artists are similar in the sense that they use substances and other objects in their performances, however, these substances were used for different reasons. Abramovic used substances because she continually wanted to see how far she can push her body to give spectacular performances while Althamer used substances in order to paint a picture.  Jason Mecier and Andrew Gorkovenko 1. Who is Jason Mecier? Jason Mecier is a mosaic artist that creates images of celebrities out of anything he wants, from bacon to make Kevin Bacon and even Honey Boo Boo from trash (although this sounds terrible, the mosaic actually turned out pretty nice. I wouldn't be offended if I was her.). He is quite popular as an artist. According to his biography, his work has been featured in music videos, televsion, and bought by many different celebrities.  2. Who is Andrew Gorkovenko? Andrew Gorkovenko is a Russian graphic designer that actually works as an advertising designer specializing in brands. While he does use other media other than food to do most of his work, one of his works that I saw that I thought was very cool was his TripTea collection. Here he creates packaging for different teas and uses the actual tea leaves themselves to depict each country.  3. How are they similar and how are they different? I think they're both similar in

  My art project for this week was to use food as a media! What did I make? I made a carrot using flour, water, and paprika for the carrot part, pesto and butter for the leaf part. I'm not going to lie, I was actually trying to go for a strawberry but the color didn't turn out as red as I liked. It looked more orange instead. I also didn't have anything yellow that I could use for the seeds that I was also willing to throw away, so it really looks like a carrot.  Why did I do this? To be honest, I forgot about this project until I came home from work today at 8pm. I wa eating a late dinner and looking at my noodles when I realized oh crap I have an art project to do. And I'm also almost out of gas so I can't really go anywhere right now either. So I thought "what haven't we done?", Food. We didn't do anything related to food yet.
